RV Storage in Los Angeles (LA), California

You moved to Los Angeles for the year-round sunny weather, and while you may love basking in the California heat, your RV doesn’t. Now you may be wondering, how much damage can a little sun do to a 20,000-lb RV? The answer is “quite a bit.” If you don’t take the necessary precautions, you risk roof damage, tire damage, seal damage, and even cracked walls/floors.

While you can wax your RV’s exterior, an enclosed or covered RV storage space is the best preventative measure. But are these RV storage options easy to find in bustling LA? You’d be surprised. On peer-to-peer platforms like Neighbor, you can find a wide variety of RV storage options (at prices up to 30% lower).

If enclosed and covered RV storage is low in your LA neighborhood, you should be using RV sunshades, RV skirting, and/or an RV cover at the very least.

Ultimately, our recommendations for RV storage options depend on both the size and type of RV.

Motorhome parked in the outdoors

For larger motorhomes like the Coachman Encore (Class Cs between 20’-30’ long), we recommend a private carport.

Here’s why:

Many LA residents struggle to find fully enclosed RV storage options in residential neighborhoods in the area (from Los Feliz to Venice to Cheviot Hills). Plus, most home garages are 24 feet long max—not to mention many aren’t climate-controlled. For this reason, we recommend an RV-friendly carport. Fortunately, most carports are 40’ long, accommodating larger and smaller RV types.

RV parked on the side of a house

For camper vans like the Mercedes Sprinter (Class Bs around 20’ long), we recommend a secured residential garage.

Here’s why:

Camper vans are one of the only RV types that will safely fit in a standard-sized home garage (with the exception of teardrop trailers and other smaller towable RVs). While some neighborhoods in LA are safer than others (for example, Sherman Oaks is safer than Hollywood), residential spaces like a private garage are, on average, 14 times safer than traditional storage units.

Neighbors smiling for portrait

For travel trailers like the Forest River Cherokee, we recommend a leveled driveway.

Here’s why:

Because Los Angeles isn’t prone to severe rainstorms, you won’t have to park your trailer at an angle to encourage water runoff on your RV’s roof. Leveled parking spaces make trailer storage a breeze. On the other hand, parking a trailer on a sloped driveway is an involved task (that requires special equipment and multiple steps).

For fifth wheels and toy haulers like the Keystone Cougar (measuring up to 40’ long), we recommend a leveled RV pad.

Here’s why:

For the same reasons you won’t want to park a travel trailer on a slope, you won’t want to park a fifth wheel or toy hauler on an incline either (summarized briefly, it’s a hassle and requires specialized equipment). However, unlike a travel trailer, a fifth wheel or toy hauler is unlikely to fit on a standard-sized driveway. For this reason, you’ll want to look for a leveled RV pad instead.

Cost of RV Storage in Los Angeles: Peer-to-Peer vs. Traditional

It’s common knowledge that living in LA is expensive. What isn’t common knowledge is how expensive RV storage is. Unfortunately, traditional RV storage facilities have a habit of leaving monthly rates unclear. They encourage users to contact the facility for more information on RV storage costs rather than spelling out costs explicitly.

But with peer-to-peer marketplaces like Neighbor, you’ll find transparent, upfront prices, allowing you to make an informed decision. Plus, Neighbor is based in all 50 states and thousands of U.S. cities, offering endless options for Los Angeles residents seeking RV storage.

Additionally, peer-to-peer RV storage is around 30% cheaper compared to traditional storage facilities.

  • Traditional RV/trailer storage: Average of $200-$250 per month
  • Peer-to-peer RV/trailer storage (Neighbor.com): Average of $100-$150 per month

Types of RV Storage Spaces

At a traditional storage facility, your options are limited. You can park your RV in a traditional storage unit or in a canopied parking lot. And while you’ll be able to choose the size of the storage unit, that’s where the variety usually ends.

  • 10’x20’ units (fits camper vans, smaller Class C motorhomes, and teardrop trailers)
  • 10’x30’ units (fits standard Class C RVs & larger travel trailers)
  • 10’x40’ units (fits most RV types including some 5th wheel/toy hauler models)

With peer-to-peer marketplaces, you have more options to choose from:

  • RV pads (cement or unpaved)
  • Driveways
  • Private residential garages
  • Parking lots (unpaved and paved)
  • RV-friendly carports
  • Pull-through unpaved lots

With Neighbor, you can find storage types in any of the following categories: a) outdoor uncovered, b) outdoor covered, c) indoor RV storage, and d) climate-controlled storage.

Paved RV Pads

  • ✔️ Outdoor
  • ✔️ Can Be Covered or Uncovered
  • ✔️ Back-In
Right for You If:
  • You want added protections like installed security cameras or a host acting as on-site security personnel. Plus, RV pads in residential areas are about 14 times less likely to be broken into, especially if the space is gated.
  • You want a space of your own: Paved RV pads typically only have room for one recreational vehicle at a time, meaning you won’t have to share with another renter.
Not the Right Fit If:
  • You’re not planning on investing in a quality RV cover: Because LA is sunny most of the year, your RV will be at increased risk of UV damage if you don’t protect it with a cover.
  • You’re on a budget: Because these paved RV pads are more private than paved lots, you’ll end up paying extra.

Unpaved RV Pads

  • ✔️ Outdoor
  • ✔️ Usually Uncovered
  • ✔️ Back-in
Right for You If:
  • You want an affordable option: While more private than a parking lot, your RV is at risk of getting stuck if a severe tropical storm hits, turning this unpaved RV pad into a mud pit.
  • You plan on storing your RV for prolonged periods. Unpaved RV pads aren’t subject to the same time restrictions as driveways when it comes to parking a motorhome or trailer. In this space type, you can store your trailer for as long as you need.
Not the Right Fit If:
  • You can’t check in on your RV regularly. Unpaved RV pads (as well as paved RV pads) put your RV at greater risk for moisture exposure. Therefore, you’ll need to check in often for signs of rust or lodged debris.
  • You’re worried about your RV getting stuck in the mud. As a beginner, the last thing you want to deal with is maneuvering an RV out of a mud pit.

Paved Parking Lot

  • ✔️ Outdoor
  • ✔️ Can be Covered or Uncovered
  • ✔️ Back-in
Right for You If:
  • You want to avoid underbelly damage often inflicted by unpaved lots.
  • You want a more affordable option. Paved lots are typically cheaper and more readily available than residential spaces in the greater Los Angeles area.
Not the Right Fit If:
  • You’re worried about auto theft or break-ins. Auto thefts in LA are hitting record highs, and commercial lots are usually a thief’s number-one target.
  • You have a larger motorhome that won’t fit in a standard-sized parking space.

Unpaved Lot

  • ✔️ Outdoor
  • ✔️ Uncovered
  • ✔️ Pull-through
Right for You If:
  • You have a tighter budget: Because an unpaved lot is less private than an unpaved RV pad, they’re also cheaper.
  • You need extra space to maneuver. As a beginner, you’ll want to give yourself plenty of space to maneuver your RV. Unpaved lots have fewer obstacles, allowing you to pull through, back in, and make multiple-point turns without the threat of hitting other cars or light posts.
Not the Right Fit If:
  • You can’t perform routine roof maintenance: If you’re not willing to pay extra for overhead coverage in Los Angeles, CA, you’ll need to stay up-to-date on RV roof maintenance.
  • You want easy access to your motorhome as most unpaved lots sit outside city limits and are located in more rural areas.

Driveway

  • ✔️ Outdoor
  • ✔️ Uncovered
  • ✔️ Back-in
Right for You If:
  • You want storage downtown. Los Angeles has no shortage of driveway RV storage options readily available on Neighbor, which means your trailer will be easily accessible at any time.
  • You want a storage space with low foot traffic: While you’ll share the space with the host living on the property, it’s far better than sharing a commercial lot with hundreds of other vehicle owners. Remember, more foot traffic means it will be easier for a thief to go unnoticed.
Not the Right Fit If:
  • You need to store an RV for long periods. California has strict regulations about how long you can park trailers and motorhomes in residential driveways. Consult local Los Angeles policy.
  • You are unfamiliar with how to park an RV on a slope safely: The most hilly parts of Los Angeles include Boyle Heights, the Mt. Washington area, and the Crenshaw district. If you’re storing your RV in any of these areas, you’ll need to learn how to park a travel trailer on a slope safely. Just follow these helpful tips!

Private Garage

  • ✔️Indoor
  • ✔️Covered
  • ✔️Enclosed
  • ✔️Back-in

Right for You If:

  • You want your RV completely enclosed. Private garages are a great safeguard against vehicle break-ins. Unfortunately, only certain types of RVs—camper vans and teardrop trailers, for example—will fit within a standard home garage.
  • You are seeking a climate-controlled space. Note that not all private garages are climate-controlled.

Not the Right Fit If:

  • You need a more affordable storage solution. Private garages are more expensive than exposed RV storage options, regardless of what part of LA you find them in.
  • You have an extra tall or long trailer that may be too large to fit in typical garages.

Carport

  • ✔️Outdoor
  • ✔️Covered
  • ✔️Back-in

Right for You If:

  • You need overhead protection but aren’t willing to pay for a full private garage. To many RVers, a carport is seen as the best of both worlds. It offers some of the protections of an indoor space but has the lower price tag of an outdoor space.

Not the Right Fit If:

  • You’re still learning how to drive an RV: Carports will have limited space to turn and maneuver, which makes it difficult for beginners to pull their RVs into the storage space they’re renting.
  • You want multiple rentals to choose from: Carports are rarer on the Neighbor platform, which means you’ll have fewer options to choose from.
